Advocacy programme
Fighting trafficking at the grassroots
There has been an increase in human trafficking activities across the world for several years now. For this reason, the Centre for Initiative Against Human Trafficking (CIAHT) has made the fight against human trafficking its mandate — to stop or mitigate it in Ghana through advocacy and grassroots sensitizations.
According to Ghana's Human Trafficking Act 2005 (Act 694), human trafficking means the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring, trading or receipt of persons within and across national borders by the use of threats, force or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, the abuse of power or exploitation of vulnerability.
Methods of human trafficking
Ghana is identified as a source, transit and destination of human trafficking. Internal migration leads to the vulnerability of some dependent and independent migrants due to desperation. Traffickers use:
- Deceit
- Recruitment schemes
- Forged documents
- Connection persons
Target communities
CIAHT has targeted five electoral areas in the Tolon District, made up of twenty communities known for their involvement in internal migration for street work and kayayo. We work with chiefs, opinion leaders, religious bodies and youth groups in each community to change attitudes and protect children.
